Background Information

Mission of the project:
To design an animatronic device to be used in a haunted maze and capable of scaring children.

Overview:
This project entitled ‘Mechanical creepers’ is an animatronic-based freshman design project created in accordance with the haunted house theme as specified by the Engineering Design Lab section. The goal of this project is to design a mechanical device that would be incorporated into a haunted maze in the design lab and would perform successfully its crowning task; scaring the children who will be made to walk through the haunted maze.
Brainstorming is the first task to be done towards achieving the desired goal of the project. The major tasks in this project include project research and findings, mechanical design of fabricated parts, creation of algorithm with which the mechanical creeper would function, electrical design incorporated in device, integration of components into the complete mechanical module and testing of completed module.



Constraints:
  • The project must be kept G-rated. No weapons and no blood must be involved.
  • Haunted maze hall ways will have an approximate cross section of 8'x8' lined with black tarp.
  • Power supply source must be kept under 10 A total draw.
  • All parts must be fabricated.
  • Audio and lighting devices must be incorporated into the design of the project.
Project timeline:
To achieve the desired goal of this project, the team made a project timeline to guide them and help with time management given a duration of ten weeks for the project.

Project Budget:

To achieve the goal of this project, the team will require some things which will not be available to them in the design lab. So, the team made a budget of the things that will be needed to complete the project in the a cost efficient way.

Deliverables:
At the end of the project, it is expected of the team to deliver a final and complete animatronic design. Along with these, a physical prototype which will be made during the course of the project will also be submitted. A physical prototype will be contrived initially to serve as a guide towards creating the actual project that includes the electrical parts like the circuits and mechanical parts like the box with linear actuators used to aid the opening of the top slab. Also, since codes will be written for the device to function, an algorithm detailing how the codes will function will be done. It will describe what each line of code does on the device and how the device will respond to each line of code. This will also be done for the LED lights, since it will also be programmed using the same software.
During the course of the project, the team is also required to update the blog weekly to have an account of what is done weekly until the end of the project.
