Frequently Asked Questions

What are Animatronics?
Animatronics are robotic devices that work, move, look and act like actual animals. They are robotic simulations of living things - humans, animals etc. They are mostly used in the entertainment industry in numerous ways. Sometimes they are used in shows and movies to create an illusion of living beings. While they have been greatly replaced by digital contemporary movies, animatronics are still utilized in a lot of different methods today and an example is our mechanical creepers project.

How do Animatronics work?
Small animatronics and the much more detailed components of the large ones make use of servo motors to make the device move. Sometimes, movement actuators are incorporated into animatronic arms and legs to make them move like human beings.

How long does it take to build an Animatronic device?
Depending on the complexity, size of the animatronic device, and how customized the creation is, the time to construct an animatronic device can vary greatly from a matter of weeks to several months. But with a greater allowance of time, the device will naturally reflect a greater level of involvement. See the background information for the project timeline.

How would the device work without any human intervention?
A sensor system would be used to trigger the electrical and mechanical system in the box which would jerk out the skeletal device. See the Background section for a more detailed explanation.

Can I repair or maintain the animatronics myself?
Animatronic devices can be maintained and repaired by the buyer, if one has the technical know-how and a reasonable amount of mechanical skills.

How much does it cost to build an animatronic?
The amount spent on building animatronic devices vary on the size, complexity, and functions of the animatronic device. For a detailed information about cost of building our animatronic device, see the background information page.
